In this Reboot Republic Podcast we talk to Prof Cliona Ni Chealaigh, Clinical lead Inclusion Health Service, Eileen Sweeney, Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Anthony O Connor, Consultant Tallaght Hospital, and Sinead McGarry, Social Worker.
They explain how our hospitals and mental health system is coping with the impact of COVID and lockdowns, the reality facing patients in our mental health services, the hollowing out of primary care through redeployment to contract tracing and testing, and devastating impact on essential services such as those for people with disabilities and the disproportionate impact of lockdowns on the poor and vulnerable.
We talk about what should be done – a human rights and equality approach to our entire health system- how a Zero Covid strategy is the approach needed, prevention and primary care, substantial additional investment in all aspects of our public health system and proper use of resources. They make the point that there is hope in the fact that we are having these conversations, raising these issues and hopefully politics and the system will learn from this pandemic and properly address structural inequalities and under investment.
