152. No Keys, No Degrees: The Worst Ever Student Accommodation Crisis

This Reboot Republic talks to student representatives from across the country about the student accommodation crisis which has been described as the worst this country has ever seen. We talk to Clare Austick, President of the Union of Students in Ireland, Róisín Nic Lochlainn of the NUIGalway SU, Aine Daly of Technical University for the Shannon, Rachel McCartney of Waterford IT, and Liam Cosgrove of Maynooth University SU.

They outline the impact of the crisis on students, that there are 10,000 students across the country in some form of housing emergency right now, the problems with private investor provided student accommodation, solutions such as the funding and building of affordable student accommodation by third level colleges, the right to housing and a possible future of emigration. There isn’t much hope coming from Government policy, but these leaders offer some real hope.
