519. Northern Ireland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People, Koulla Yiasouma

It was a great pleasure to be joined in the tortoise shack by NI’s Commissioner for Children, Koulla Yiasouma. We discuss the recent riots in NI and the issues that have led to many young people participating in them.

Koulla explains the inter-generational traumas many young people are exposed to and how they are coerced into acts of violence and vandalism. We discuss the need for integration of communities and not just of schools and why in dealing with legacy issues children must have a voice that they have been denied so far. We also talk about how something good has to come out of Covid and why that should be a plan to build back fairer.
