Ep.33 Eviction: Protecting Renters

This Reboot Republic Podcast discusses the need for an extension of the ban (moratorium) on evictions of tenants in the private rental sector that is currently in place during Level 5 COVID restrictions. We talk to John Mark McCafferty CEO of Threshold, Wayne Stanley Head of Communications and Policy at the Simon Communities and Rosemary Hennigan Policy Coordinator with Focus Ireland.

They make the case that extending the moratorium is needed to prevent families and individuals being made homeless, to give renters a sense of security in the coming months, to give some breathing space for homeless services and housing providers to work on further reducing current homeless levels.

We also discuss how inserting the right to housing would allow such a measure to be put in place, as it would enable the balancing of the right to a home with private property rights. We encourage you to email your local TD and the Minister for Housing to ask them to protect renters and extend the eviction ban for 6 months and introduce the Referendum on inserting a Right to Housing in the Constitution. Threshold is also providing advice for tenants in difficulties, contact 1800 454 454
