Ep.40 Precarious Academia – Third Level Inequality

This Reboot Republic addresses the issue of precarious work and conditions, low pay, and its impacts for academics and researchers at third level educational institutions. Rory talks to Maria Delaney of Noteworthy.ie, who undertook a major investigation into third level precarious work, Dr Theresa O Keefe, a lecturer in UCC and founder of Third Level WorkPlace Watch, and Dr Patricia McGrath, precarious worker and mature student. Rory begins by outlining his own experience as a precarious academic, the difficulties of constant short term contracts and the personal and mental health impacts of precarious work at third level. This is an important discussion, that highlights discrimination, exploitation and lack of prospects for third level workers in Ireland.
