Ep.55 – Surviving Parenting in Lockdown

This Reboot Republic Podcast explores the reality of experiences of parenting in lockdown, and ‘home schooling’, and how parents can survive these challenging times. Hosted by Dr Rory Hearne, himself a dad of four kids who are 1, 5 ,6 and 16, the panel features Dr Mary O Kane, a lecturer in Psychology and Early Childhood education, Sinead Matson, mother and PhD candidate in early childhood education, Lucina Russell, mother and Arts administrator, and Tracy McGinnis, mother and advocate for disability and carers rights.

Tracy provides an honest account of the reality of parenting a child with profound additional needs and the isolation, and costs of trying to get through lockdown. Dr O Kane provides some really useful practical advice for parents – to lower expectations, focus on being ‘good enough’ parents, and, as Sinead explains focus on ‘survival’. If you are a parent or want to understand what parents are going through in lockdown, this is worth a listen.
