Ep.88 – Lessons from Australia with Consultant in Public Health, Niall Conroy

In this Reboot Republic talks to Dr Niall Conroy an Irish consultant in public health medicine working in Queensland Australia. Dr Conroy explains the successful approach taken to COVID19 in Australia including mandatory hotel quarantine for all incoming travelers, along with quarantine in peoples homes combined with support such as mental health and practical social care.

Dr Conroy outlines how Ireland has an illogical approach like trying to fix a leak with a bucket catching the water rather than fixing the source. There is “no living with the virus”. He analyses the problems within the Irish approach – it is a political strategy not a public health strategy. He also criticises the failure of successive Irish Governments to provide consultant contracts and the additional resources to public health doctors in Ireland. Resourced public health is essential to deal with COVID19.
