Policed The Beat – Overseeing Terrorism Powers

New legislation proposes the creation of an Independent Examiner of Security Legislation who will review how security powers are used, and whether they are adequate and appropriate. In this episode of The Beat, Vicky speaks to Lord David Anderson, who held the equivalent role in the UK from 2011-2017.

We talk about what the job entails, what powers are needed to do it, and reflect on the Irish proposals. It’s a space that’s often hidden and secret, but Lord Anderson shows how government really could give people confidence that how the powers are used is being watched.
